iCitizen

Active Citizenship and Service Learning (ACSL) has been identified as a useful teaching and learning strategy effective for delivering majority of desirable outcomes from education, high academic achievement, aptitude for responsible civic engagement, character and skills for responsible adult life.

It integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. ACSL is learner-centered and supports project-based and interactive learning. With ACSL, students work in teams to solve a genuine community problems, which are related concepts being learnt in the classroom. Through interaction with one another, probing and reflection activities, participants in ACSL develop essential life skills such as: civics, communication, team dynamics, questioning, critical thinking and problem-solving.

Apart from developing life skills, students improve in academic achievement as they reflect on linkages between their subjects and their project experiences.

Research has shown that when such project based activity are supported with ICTs, there are unprecedented levels of voluntary participation which are usually translated in positive leadership qualities when participants become fully engaged with society.

ILN is keen in introducing this concept to Nigerian learning environment. It commissioned base documents as well as a pilot study in 72 schools to gather materials that would inform a successful introduction in Nigeria.

These ALSL pages would then continue to be the center of activity and collaboration to guide the process of integration and support implementation once the programme has been adopted in our schools.
